dogs lying on porch

Some leftover summer dog photos:

(Sigh.) Since we got Abbey I don’t bother planting anything in this front bed. [June 22, 2016]

Abbey leaping in lake

No, we haven’t just returned from camping. In my house, it’s hunting season (archery deer), and too cool to have the windows open all the time but not quite time to put the yard to bed for winter.

I still wanted to share these dog photos from summer camping, though:

Abbey swimming
I like this photo because you can see the path Abbey takes in the water. This is Grousehaven Lake at the Rifle River State Recreation Area near Lupton, Michigan, our favorite place to camp. [Aug. 5, 2016]

Abbey and Maggie at camp
Abbey and Maggie swam separately (it’s what the handlers could handle) but relaxed together afterward. As we say, “A wet Lab is a happy Lab.” [Aug. 5, 2016]

Maggie on sleeping bags
In the period before I took the sleeping bags to the dry cleaner, Maggie made good use of them.

Blonde dog lying along back of loveseat face to face with giant stuffed dog

One day I came home and on the sidewalk leading up to the porch was a giant stuffed dog. My son had found and salvaged it. My daughter claims to want it, but has yet to take it to her apartment, so in the meantime it is a living room fixture.

The (stuffed) dog was on the floor. I was on the floor, stretching my back, which meant Abbey had to join me. Then she noticed a pillow … [May 1]

Dog and cat sitting together

We have a cat and dog who don’t fight like cats and dogs. The half Lab, half golden retriever (our “little” dog) was nearly 1 when we introduced her for the first time to a cat, a rescue who is exactly 2 weeks older than her. They scrap but they are sparring partners, each as likely to instigate.

Despite Daryl’s slight look of suspicion, he and Abbey are just hanging out. This also is a good illustration of their size difference, which isn’t always clear, her at 54 pounds to his 11. [May 14]

Black longhaired cat sitting on balcony rail and looking skyward

This is the first of at least five days in a row of animal photos, so I hope you come back.

Two photos of dogs in the same hole.
Abbey, right, excavated this spot, but Maggie sometimes borrows it to guard the sidewalk. [April 25, May 2]

Daryl spent the first 10 months of his life outside so he rarely is interested in going out, but the balcony has captured his interest. [May 14]

Pecking order in squirrel world. One sits on the balcony rail, eating and guarding the food below, while another waits in a tree for its turn. [April 10]

Outdoor photos today, although more than half of them were taken through windows.

Yes, I spoil the squirrels. This one knows life is good, and is watching me watching her. Yes, that is snow. [April 10]

I hope to get a better shot of these mourning doves, sometimes, but they’re a skittish pair. I don’t usually see them until early evening, when the other birds and squirrels have pretty well cleared out. [April 17]

Daryl crept outside while I was refilling the suet cage so I allowed him about a minute to prowl the site he spends so much time studying from the other side of the sliding glass door. A rescue who spent the first 10 months of his life outside, he has ventured out only a handful of times in the year-plus we have had him. [April 18]

Two dogs watching out separate windows

At this point I may as well just confess that I like taking pictures of animals and plants, especially my own. Like you haven’t guessed. So expect this sort of thing to show up more frequently. Questions and comments always welcome.

After early spring brought snow at least once a week, I think the entire mid-Michigan area was thrilled when 70 degrees finally seemed within reach. I opened windows all over the house and Daryl was quick to take advantage. [April 17]

Maggie, at left, had some of her fur shaved off for recent surgery to remove a 1.5-pound fatty tumor. She weighs 95 pounds to Abbey’s 55, so sometimes the blonde gets dragged across the floor.

The dogs didn’t understand this tug toy at first. It took considerable coaching to get them to grasp that they should be on opposite ends.

This poor little squirrel is one of the reasons I keep water and food on the balcony. It has mites, so quite a bit of its fur is missing.
