
From the emergence case this week: this magnificent owl had a crumpled wing and clearly would not thrive. Usually the proboscis is black and in two halves that gradually meld, but this baby’s proboscis was white and the two halves kept moving about without connecting. I mentioned it to a biologist, who said that proboscises that remain split are one of the traits they see in butterflies that have trouble emerging and expanding properly. I love learning new things and promise to share happier photos from my next shift.
