I can’t believe I haven’t sounded off about the Red Wings goalie situation yet. It certainly has occupied some of my attention this summer, and grinds me to this day.
Grinds why? Because after all the blahblah from Holland and Co. about how the Wings’ painfuly early exit from the playoffs couldn’t all be hung on the goalie who can’t score goals for them, HELLO, OFFENSE? Manny Legace was left twisting in the wind, facing the distinct possibility of a season of unemployment. He is far too good a netminder for that, and I’m glad the Blues picked him up.
As far as where Detroit turned instead … Hasek? Granted he’s cheap and took a short contract, so no harm done. This looks like a Gerald Ford, let’s just keep things together until a real winner turns up kind of move. The kids still in training are going to get more attention than usual this year, I think.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Hasek when he’s healthy. I just don’t trust him to stay healthy. If all the Wings have to turn to come April is Osgood a good guy, but he’s never gonna be elite I will be annoyed.
